Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

has anyone attempted this? i plan on using OEM equipment due to (hopefully) simplicity of programming. i have the engine harness, and plan to use the 350Z gauges. fabricated into my S-13 dash. along with the steering colum. i know i need the 350Z key and electronic chip in the key needed to start the engine. im thinking of using the interior (dash) harness from the 350Z switches on the steering colum and tri gauge cluster on the center of the dash, pull it to the 350Z ECU, the from the 350Z ECU hard wire it into the S-13 chassie harness. that way im telling the 350Z ECU to turn on the lights with the 350Z switches, but the signal is going to the S-13 lights. is my hypothisis incorrect? let me know. im curious as to all the problems i may incurr.

any help would be appriciated. advice or critiszm.

    Thanks.

i want to use OEM ECU and Harness but its most likely not going to happen for a while for me so I can afford to buy the harness

nice! what problems do you expect to encurr? how are you going to go about the wiring? im glad im not alone

Re: Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

from what I have read its actualy straight forward

what you will need is an ABS s14 diff
this is because the speedo on the 350z is read off the diff and not the trans
But fortunatly for us, the s14 abs and other r200 ABS diffs are easily affordable
the 240sx ABS speed sensor is the same sensor for the 350z, or built exactly the same.

Re: Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

wow, i was not aware of that, i was hoping that to use the 350Z diff. and that it would not need too much fabricating. so all i need was to shorten the driveshaft and balance. ill look into the diff further. thanks.

as for the wiring? what are you going to do about that?

Re: Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

I have decided that I am going to have a pro japanese tuner do it for me the next time he comes out. It's probably going to be cheaper for me to do it that way, but I'll still buy the MS2 kit from fred so I can go drifting in the time being.

    Ib of Proxy Concourse:

Where did you get that info from?

I have reviewed several FSMs and with the exception of some very early G35s, all Z33s and G35s had a full CAN system implementation.  The cluster receives all its data signals from the combination unified meter/AC amp.  The vehicle speed signal comes from the ABS control module via the CAN lines.  It is a 12V pwm type signal.

wtf is the CAN lines ?

Re: Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

    CAN =  Controller Area Network

Most (if not all) of the newer Nissans (~04+) have some degree of this system implemented.  It allows high speed communication between the various control units using only 2 wires.

Typically you will see the ecm, tcm, abs/tcs controller, bcm and some sort of driver information system as deviices on the CAN network.

For some people, it is the main reason for not implementing updated engine control systems in earlier model vehicles when doing engine swaps.

Re: Using OEM 350Z ECU & Harness

so to get the speedo to work i will need ABS? if so is there a way to fool the ECU into thinking a speed sensor is an ABS sensor?

is there anyone who has done this before? anyone from the other side of the ocean?

i know i can go online and get the FSM, but where can i pick one up at? im looking for 350Z 2006 rev-up.

any links to the online FSM would be appriciated.

    thanks, -Roy

I'm with eng92. I've come across this topic on all the forums I've been on and being a technician by trade, let me tell you, you better know your *** when it comes to messing with CAN systems. Its really easy to talk about the theory of mixing and matching different components from different manufacturers and from different year cars but to actually do it and make it work, good luck. I'm not saying it can't be done just be prepared for some serious brain storming. I know of one dude who put an S54 from an E46 M3 into E30 325IS and is still working the bugs out after what seems like a year and he's an engineering student from MIT. MITE46 from E46fanatics. Check it out. There is another guy in Australia who put the drive train from an E39 M5 into his E34 M5 and he is also having driveability issues. Your best bet is stand alone man!!!
