04 WRX with 06 Sti front clip and 350Z drivetrain!

    Hey guys,

As some of you know I sold my car and my swap a few weeks back.  As hard as I try I'm having trouble shaking the urge to do another project.

     So, here's the idea:

I have access to a 2004 WRX that's been burned in the engine bay.  It's been totally burned in the front in fact and will require a complete new front clip - everything.  I'd skip it all together if it wasn't available for so cheap, like $1200 or so.  So, if I were to go this route I'd go for a tube framed front end like Broaner is doing with his S13 that way I can just cut off the old burned radiator support and front frame horns.  That would make it easy to mount a cheap Summit type radiator, aftermarket front bumper, OEM fenders and aftermarket fiberglass hood. - All that would be relatively cheap to do and the front would be basically done.

Then for a motor I'd like to use the familier VQ30DE with my old modified-for-RWD stock intake manifold.  A 6 speed Z tranny with throw out bearing spacer and stock VQ30DE ECU.  The front crossmember or oil pan will require some loving attention, probably a new oil pan would do it.

For wiring I'd have to go with a painless wiring kit or the like.  The front wiring is long gone and the dash wiring is probably pretty hot as well. So, it would essentially be a stripped down, no AC, custo wired type of thing.  I'm comfortable with doing that if needed.

I'd keep it RWD for simplicity and glorious burnouts and pray the rear end could handle the power.

Anybody looking to sponsor a good project like this :P?

So, am I crazy?  Is this a good idea?  Any thoughts at all?

    Fred

This is basically what I was thinking for the front end (credit goes to "Gavster" from zilvia.net):

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

Dang, I really like this idea!  The car needs new front suspension and brakes too upon further inspection but I think I can scrounge that stuff up.

Does anyone know how much power the stock Subie rear end will handle?  I'm sure I'm on new territory there but if stock AWD subie guys can make 4-500hp on AWD then I'm sure the stock rear end would handle half of that, right?

Maybe I could turn this into the official "EngineSwapTech.Com Project Car" to help attract more visitors to the site.  And, maybe get some media attention, magazine, or otherwise.

Any more thoughts on this guys?

    Fred

I probably could if I made an adapter plate to mate the VQ to the impreza 5 speed tranny...but this car is an automatic so I'd have to buy a manual impreza tranny.  I'd just as soon buy a 6 speed Z tranny I think and keep it RWD.  I'll think about that...

Well, here's the potential victim!  I know it looks too far gone but really it's not all that bad considering what I want to do to it.  The air bags are deployed but I don't plan to replace them anyway.  All the interior is there and is good.  Nearly every body panel on the car needs body work which sux but oh well, I need to learn how to fill a dent anyway Smile [:)].

This is what I'd like to end up with basically:

I think it sounds like a great idea! If you've got the time and money, go for it. The subie guys will call heresy for not putting a horizontally opposed motor in it, but oh well. It can be like a basic version of Kamakubo's drift machine.

Doesn't the G35X have a VQ and AWD?

I just totally geeked out about the idea of a VQ-powered 3000GT. If I ever get the resources to do such a thing, it will be done.

Really??  I've always loved the USDM WRX and especially the 04 style front end, to each his own!

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

Don't get worried.  Its just me.  Its not the styling really.  Its just the general shape.  They're too tall.  I love my cars super low overall, with a low roofline, gently sloped windsheild, and comparatively wide and long.  Call me stubborn but I can never admire cars that don't have a drop dead gorgeous silhouette.  Pretty much like the S chassis'.  Also, the same reason I really love the Aston Martins, Jag XKR, NSX, Every Ferrari ever, Corvette, etc...

One more thing about this cool idea.  Your gonna get all the haters on the mismatched motor manufacturer vs. chassis manufacturer issue.  Generally I'm one of those people but this is different.

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

Well, I ran the idea by the boss and got a price from him.  $1,000 gets the car!  I haven't totally made up my mind to do it yet though...I don't have much money right now for this project, it will have to move along slowly.

I need some ideas on the front end repair/tube frame front rad support.  Anybody have any pics of race cars or project cars that have tube fronts that I could look at?
