Official Engine and Tranny Weight List

    Hello,

I'm going to compile a list of engine and transmission weights.  All weights are on a new, professionally calibrated, industrial scale and will be photographed for accuracy.  The engine pallets weigh 53lbs, I still need to weigh a tranny pallet.  I intend to weigh all motors without accessories or wiring but with all manifolds and fuel rail(s).  All motors have been drained of oil and coolant but aren't necessarily "bone" dry.

    Empty Pallet - 53 lbs

    VQ30DE - 330lbs

    VQ35DE (rwd) - 329lbs

    KA24DE - 330lbs

06 Forester 2.5L non turbo (no exhaust manifolds)

    1997 BMW 328I  348lbs w/o pallet

02 Corvette engine (alum. block) - 456lbs w/o pallet weight (note: this one is on a lighter pallet then the others, this pallet weighed 28lbs)

    02 Suburban 5.3L (iron block) - 503lbs w/o pallet weight  - 74lbs higher than the aluminum block 5.7L version

    Hey Fred,

Is it possible for you to weigh a FWD SR20 engine along with a 6 speed maxima or sentra spec v tranny? Thanks.

I'll try, can't say when though, I don't have either easily accessible right now :(.

What accessories are installed on each engine?  Knowing that an alternator weighs 20 some pounds, and exhaust manifolds vary, it would be interesting to know which engines have what installed for an apples to apples comparison.

      Cool job though.

Basically they have no accessories installed at the time of weighing, they will have exhaust manifolds unless they had to be removed to sit solidly on the pallet  The Subaru motor has no exhaust manifolds for that reason.  Also, vehicles with permanently mounted catalytic converters will have their exhaust manifolds removed.

That's about as accurate as I can be without going to a whole bunch more work.

Re: Official Engine and Tranny Weight List

Updated the list, added the 5.7L vette motor and the 5.3L truck motor.   These are becoming popular choices for swaps into import chassis such as the 240sx.  Often people decide between these two motors due to the lower cost of the 5.3l  vs. the higher performance and lighter weight of the 5.7L.

Re: Official Engine and Tranny Weight List

Bump an old thread, but the VG30 block weighs 108lbs more than the VQ30. Figure 438lbs then for the VG30DE engine, not including the weight of the turbos if you're comparing to a DETT engine.

Re: Official Engine and Tranny Weight List

Thanks for the weights. Now I know my S13 won't need to adjust suspension after a VQ swap.

Any chance you can weight a KA 5 Speed MT and a VQ 6 Speed MT?

    Thanks
