If you're gonna tear into it then doing valvetraing stuff makes lots of sense.  I didn't think you wanted to go that deep right away.

True about the HR pump being cheap insurance if they fit.
What would your ECU setup be with ITB's?  It can be really tricky man and I've never seen boke TB's big enough to flow for the VQ.  If you haven't seen this thread already check it out.  Some decent info in there. http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306264

Z33 IM will clear the S13 hood because the front is super low.  The back of the hood slants upward and the motor slants downward a couple degrees.  Check this. http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi  Uppers are there too but lunch is over.  But for that matter you might as well get an MREV2.

I honestly have no idea about the balance.  I'm much more of a low end grunt kinda guy.

    Broaner

I have a couple of questions hopefully you can answer.

    1. The 5AT or the 6MT  yoke can be found in what models?

    2. We just installed a VG30DE into an S13 using the 300z bell housing and 300z Flywheel, we had to grind away approximately 1/3 of the bell housing to move the starter out far enough to engage the Flywheel. I am not sure what the stock Flywheel diameter is supposed to be but we installed a stage 3 clutch onto the motor. The motor turns over now after grinding. My installation using the VQ30DE with 6 speed transmission, do you think I can use the original Maxima clutch?

    Thank you

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

Im thinking of just a quick freshing up, checking all the bearing clearences, ARB rod bolts and HR springs and 3.5L cams. Probably a hone (not bore) and new rings on the old pistons, and port match everything. Then later in the season getting some bigger cams to utilize the HR springs.

I plan on using megasquirt, and eventually when I build my VQ32 I want to use the VTC's+ megasquirt. With all the new development it should be possible in a couple years. Not bad for a sub $500 engine management system

I actually came up with an ITB setup like that link you sent me, just after I posted the other day. Then again with all the expense and complications of an ITB setup Id be better off with a 70mm TB on the usim plenum and fitting some couplers so I can adjust the runner length.

I wonder if I could get 6 CA18DE TB's and make a setup out of that? I was thinking of a setup from the heads all the way to the trumpets, with slightly bigger then usim runner diameters and the runner length probably at least 18in or so. Id also use big air boxes with feeds from both fender wells- don't hot air.

Its probably all too much effort for 240WHP though, I need me some big cams.

I just want to get the VQ in there first and see exactly what I need to go intake manifold wise. Id really like to be able to just use the DEK manifold, Ive got a couple ideas on how to use that. but we'll see.

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

    Ok just thinking aloud,

What would it take for a 350z ebay header to fit the S chassis? Im OK with adding a U joint or two in the steering setup, and with hacking up the manifold a little bit.

Im really wanting headers for my VQ30 as Im trying to go for REALLY good mid rand and top end.

Current thinking is a unopened 3L (DEK maybe just so its low miles)  with stock 3.5L cams, HR springs (shimmed once, maybe) and custom headers. A custom (ITB hopefully) intake manifold, and megasquirt, with a 7200 redline.

Id hope that put me at 230WHP+ with headers.

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

The universal joints are good in theory but in space constaints its pretty much not happening.  The reason this won't work is that the clearance problem is super close to the rack.  To make my setup work with the Z33 manifolds I  had to weld the OE  U-joint to the steering shaft itself.  This allowed me to grind the "collar" and locking nut down so it was nearly the same diameter as the shaft.  Even after this I still had to cut the outter layer/heat sheild layer of the OE manifold away and weld that to the inner layer to prohibit an exhaust leak.

All that said, I have no idea about the detailed configurations of any of the aftermarket headers and clearance possibilities.  That'd be a trial and error type thing and that would be quit expensive obviously.

I'll snap a shot next time I remember.

Well, its now a serious possibility that the motor plans for this project could be changing. Check it.

I didn't think these guys would actually come through. I've always wanted an ITB setup but didn't want it to be cobble. We'll have to see what the dyno yeilds.

Wow, those look nice! I am nowhere near getting a VQ in my car, but I've always been tempted to build an NA motor.

So far I'm still planning on turbo.

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

Sorry to disappoint guys but I have no 240 updates as of late.  I removed the 30 IM and gave it to my buddy.  Park of my excuse for not doing anything is somewhat related to this.  http://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306264 Other than that and putting it on jackstands and cleaning the rims for storage I haven't touched it.

But for the sake of automotive porn I'll post up.

I have been working on my DD Ranger quite a bit.  The record snowfall this year has helped spur that.  So far I put a 3" body lift on it and some pretty beefy rims and tires.

Also, I've been beefing up my tool collection at a decent clip recently.  Partially in preparation for a lot of extensive fabbing on the 240.  And partially because working on this truck requires basically a whole different set of tools.  Ford seems to use quite a bit of odd or specialized tools as opposed to Nissans where every bolt or nut on the thing can be undone with a 10,12,14,17 or 19mm.

That ITB setup is ghey. I'll be making my own for way under a grand. And it'll be streetable and killer.

And i'll have the cnc plans saved just to remake it.

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

since you put that so elegantly... *rolls eyes*

sure, go make a set of itb's.... ohh but dont use something that is already made, cuz that would be cheating and 'ghey' as you would put it. Make a cast, melt down some one aluminum wheels make a new lower manifold that bolts directly to the heads, and make a fucking real itb setup and make it reproduceable without going to china, and have it still resale under 1k
    go do that.

hating on good *** just cuz you cant have it.

    Re: VQ30 Powered S13 Coupe(Work in Progress)

A bit harsh but thats generally the way I think about it.  I've done plenty of cobbled things(since fixed them) on this car and I don't wanna go that route again.

But at this point I'm at a crossroads fellas.  Maybe I'm turning the darkside.  I was telling myself for a while that making 250wheel would be enough for this car.  But really, it isn't.  I'm a freak.  I'd like to put down 300+wheel with an NA setup and really, thats very cost prohibitive.  An LS1 could do all I want and only weigh a bit more than a VQ.  And less than a VQ with two snails strapped to it.

IDK  I've got plenty of time to sleep on it I suppose.
