    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

wow i take a few days off from this project and you guys are practically figuring stuff out for me hahaha. you guys take donations for the site right?  right now things are at a standstill. the tranny fits. just barely. ive hacked  up the stock X member. motor still doesnt fit. so now its more cutting, i might have to move the rack but that will effect bumpsteer.. coming up with a new way to mount the rack is tough because of the way its originally mounted. ill get you guys some more pictures tonite and maybe youll have some ideas.

Sounds like u've ended up at the same crossroad I have, just in a lot less time. If you haven't gotten a chance yet, browse thru the engine mount thread (http://www.engineswaptech.com/forums/thread/565.aspx). It was supposed to be about engine mounts but it's evolved into a X-brace replacement for the X-member, which opens the opportunity for rack relocation as well. The bump steer geometry u'll have to figure in your case (sorry but I don't have access to one to try help u out) but u sound like u have your head on str8 so I'm sure it's nothing u can't conquer. On a good note, the X-brace also introduces the possibilty of using a rack with a tighter ratio and alternate geometry to alleviate bumpsteer... And then theres the whole clearance/ rigidity potential as well... If u have the time, u can whip out a tape measure and jump on SldWx and get a good estimate of your suspension geometry and be able to make a calculated rack selection (or u could use the cardboard method...)

Expect to see some files t'row concerning the X-brace.

    Regards,

    H. Kurt Betton

Argh... guess I'll stick w/ the plan...

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

    more pics for you guys!!

it will be a bear to load all of them.

The manifolds are still towards the front. The built in oil cooler is out of the question. With some firewall massaging the stock plenum should work. (sans hoodlatch of course) The motor needs to shift to the passengerside about an inch. The transmission tunnel could have been left intact if i felt like drilling out every spot weld that held the stock tranny mount brace in place. Its easier to just cut the tunnel and weld a new piece of sheet metal in for me :)  The water temp sensor should have just BARELY enough room to fit. Shifter location wont be bad at all aswell. :)

    Hello People,

Here are some pics of my project car.

I don't know if this will work, if it doesn't I will try again soon.

My car is a 1974 260z 2 seater 60,000klms on the clock and the dash isn't cracked.

I have put a 1999 Nissan (VQ30DET alloy block) Cedric motor in with new x-member and engine mounts, new trans x-member and a new custom intake plenum pressed from 3mm thick alloy.

Rear brakes are XD Ford vented rotors with XF alloy caliper and alloy modified brackets.
Front brakes will be from Hoppers Stoppers, custom 5 lug hubs with AU3 vented rotors and alloy calipers.

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

Not yet, it is a long term project and I am taking my time as I have my own business to run.

Although there is a guy coming over Monday to start on the wiring.

I have been working on the brakes and converting to 5 stud hubs.

Recently I bought an R200 long nose VLSD with nismo alloy finned rear cover, and need to make a rear x-member to go behind the finned cover that bolts near the control arms.

Then will have to work out the axles and tailshaft.

    Cheers Rob

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

im building a cross member much like yours for my client. ill be using custom turned delrin bushings to mount the engine on though. nice work on that plenum cover. what thickness is the alum?

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

thanks, the plenum is pressed from 3mm thick alloy plate, and pressed really well with being annealled before and half way through being pressed.

The jig frame and male part are made from hardwood and pressed in a workshop press.

I am on Hybridz and classic z sites as RP975 and have some photos there, I also have lots of other photos, if you need to look at something just ask as I may have something of some use.

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

I just thought that I would show you the clearance that I have behind the crossmember.

I didn't have to cut the cross member and the steering all clears.

I did remove the crank senser alloy tab from the front of the block and will have to redo another one.

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

HRMMMM, that waterpipe gives up the room needed to fit the  motor further back!!! now to find one.

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

Maybe you could move the sensers, or electronic conectors to the top of the water pipe to give more clearance and then the rocker cover that is further back towards the firewall there is a breather pipe that would need to be turned into a right angle bend to give clearance, I have removed mine for the moment and will have to make one as well. What do you think?

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

    yulby,

Great project, thanks for stopping by to introduce it!  You've done some very nice fabrication on your mounts and the intake manifold is great too.

Yours is coming along well, can't wait to see it progress.  You may look into a Pathfinder rear coolant pipe, I believe it is shaped even tighter to the heads than the 350z one but I don't have one to look at anymore to be sure.  If you can get it behind the crossmember like yulby has then you'll be all set and the project will be much simplier.

    Re: VQ35DE powered 260z

    yulby,
i could move them but im contracted to do the job, so i need to think of the most cost effective means to do these modifications. Moving the sensors would probably cost way more than the cost of the coolant pipe and installation. the valve cover barb i wasnt sure what to do with... the composite valvecovers make it difficult to change...

    fred,

i really hope i can get behing the X member. i have a few more to replace  the cut one and it would make this whole swap really nice :)
