Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

I feel that front plates are overrated.  A firewall plate makes lots of sense though; two birds with one stone.  I've been thinking along those lines myself.  The motor should never be supported soley by the plates.  They would need to be super beefy for that to work.  I'd guess that the pic of the (ls?) you posted still utilizes "normal" engine mounts.  If you were gonna make thousands of lb/ft then I'd say hell yes, run the whole shebang.

    Just my .02

That front bumper looks sweet BTW.  I haven't seen too many of the newest STI's around yet.

Actually from my understanding they do use the plates as their sole engine mounts, no stock mounts at all.  It's apparently very common on hard core drag cars and circle track cars because it makes it easy to pull the engine or tranny w/o pulling both at the same time.

I guess it's strong enough for them?

    Here's another example:

Fred, can you do me a favor and get a straight on pic of your engine with a ruler of some sort included, or  just a bigger pic of the front end, with a dimension between those 4 holes? as well as a diameter for each hole

also, can you post a pic of the scooby engine bay (if you haven't already) with the same general dimensions, tape measure between rails would be fine for this one (i assume it has chassis rails...)

    thanks in advance

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

That seems really odd to me.  What stops the motor from shimmying forward under braking or backward under acceleration?

I guess just the bolts that holt the plates to the frame rail brackets and the stiffness of the plates themselves.

    Sure thing:

The last pic is from betton racing's gallery.  I'm not sure on the bolt hole diameter but I'd say about 3/8 - 1/2" roughly.

The frame rails are 34" apart from inside to inside. (This is a Legacy bay but they are almost identical to WRX's, Forester's, etc.)

holy p00pbaskets - are you planning to simplify that rat's nest a bit?

battery relocation, vacuum simplification etc?   the 34" dimension is what i was really looking for thanks!

Lol, yes!  It will be stipped to the bone, no battery, no fues boxes or exposed wiring,no ABS, etc.  I even plan on filling the misc. holes and smoothing out the inner structure a bit - not too much like a show car, just enough to be noticable.

No updates for a while.  Still finishing up my truck and trying to get another car sold, I'll probably just let it hibernate for a bit while I get caught up on those things.

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

    Nice!

You know the routine Fred. Lemme know how I can help. I do have some pics of an engine plate on a racing VQ engine but I need to go dig up my files. There were two other shops that were building "ProStock caliber" 350z's (engine plates are almost a must when one reaches that amount of power). I'm sure you (we) could coerce one of them into giving a few small details about the engine plate setup.

I may have missed this somewhere but are u planning for a full cage or just front half (i.e. infront of firewall).

I hope u plan to remove all the badges. I vote for jet black with everything blackened out.

    Later,

    Kurt

Argh... guess I'll stick w/ the plan...

Re: 04 WRX with VQ30DE/6spd tranny, am I crazy?

Unfortunatly I canned the project :( The car is still available actually if I wanted it but I'm not quit ready for this big of a project at the moment.

I do want to start on a big project this year though....I def. need to consider this one. I think all my future swaps will be V8 though, same amount of work with much better stock torque. I love the LSX motors so that will probably be the motor I use on my next big project.
